“Landslide Narrowly Misses Family Home in Hoarwithy”

Shocking images depict a family narrowly escaping harm as a significant landslide partially demolishes their village residence, prompting neighbors to liken the impact to an earthquake. The incident occurred in Hoarwithy, Herefordshire, around 9pm last Friday, where two homes suffered severe damage due to a cliff collapse. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, with one of the affected properties undergoing renovations while the other was unoccupied at the time of the event.

A local resident, Sam Lawrence-Lewis, 32, recounted being alerted by a passing lorry driver who noticed a fallen electric cable. Upon inspection, he discovered the extensive landslide had caused damage to nearby houses. Promptly contacting emergency services, law enforcement and fire crews were dispatched to secure the area.

“The damaged properties include an empty cottage that was already partially demolished and a neighboring house, which sustained significant harm. Thankfully, the occupants were away during the incident, sparing them from potential injuries. The impact was substantial, with a section of the residence’s rear wall severely distorted and damaged,” shared Sam Lawrence-Lewis.

Revealing concerns over the cause of the landslide, Lawrence-Lewis speculated that the recent clearing of trees along the bank by the new owner of the cottage may have contributed to the destabilization. The property had been purchased at auction approximately six months ago, and despite initial renovation attempts, issues with planning permissions had stalled progress, leaving the property in disrepair.

Offering her perspective, Suzanne, one of the affected homeowners, expressed gratitude that her family was not present during the landslide. She described the emotional toll of the event, stating, “Each time I return, it’s overwhelming.” Suzanne praised the swift response of a vigilant lorry driver who noticed the downed electrical cable, leading to the timely intervention of emergency services to secure the site.

With residents adjusting to the aftermath, a sense of uncertainty looms as they navigate the challenges posed by the extensive damage. A concerned neighbor highlighted the gravity of the situation, remarking on the fortune that no casualties occurred despite the severity of the incident.

In response to the event, Herefordshire Council announced plans to await the results of a rock face survey to assess the safety of reopening the adjacent road, ensuring the well-being of the community and properties in the vicinity.
