Late April Snow Alert: UK Faces Wintry Blast

Published on

Weather maps are signaling a late surge of wintry weather that could bring snow to certain areas of the UK later in the month, as colder air moves in despite warmer spring temperatures elsewhere.

Forecast data points to a potential risk of brief blizzard-like conditions emerging around Tuesday, April 22, and lingering for several days, with the most intense weather focused on northern and higher-altitude regions.

According to WXCharts, regions at higher risk of snow and blizzard-like conditions include parts of northern England and areas in Scotland. These areas might see snow showers accompanied by strong winds, especially over exposed terrain, leading to temporary blizzard conditions.

Temperatures in affected areas could significantly drop, with daytime highs ranging from 2C to 6C in the north during the coldest period. Overnight temperatures could dip to 0C or below, increasing the risk of frost and icy surfaces.

In contrast, southern regions are expected to experience milder conditions, with temperatures reaching 12C to 18C, particularly in southern and western England.

The maps illustrate a clear divide, with colder air moving into the North while the South retains warmer and more settled conditions.

This weather pattern is influenced by Atlantic systems approaching from the West, while high pressure to the North-east acts as a barrier. The Met Office forecasts a mostly dry start from Sunday, April 19, to Tuesday, April 28, with some showers in the far North-east initially, but many areas should experience fine and dry weather with sunny spells.

Looking ahead, the forecast suggests a predominance of dry weather with sunny intervals in the following week, although some eastern coasts may feel cool, while western areas are likely to have relatively warm temperatures.

Towards the end of the week and beyond, a return of rain or showers is expected for many, bringing unsettled conditions back.

While short-term wintry conditions are expected in the north, the overall outlook remains uncertain, with sunny spells, cooler coastal conditions, and intermittent unsettled periods anticipated as April progresses.
