A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for breaking into a woman’s residence and sexually assaulting her at knifepoint. Shane Liptrot, 26, persistently knocked on the victim’s door in the early hours of June 7 last year, startling the young woman. Upon her opening the door, he brandished a Stanley knife and began interrogating her. Despite her false claim that her boyfriend was present, he disregarded her words and forced his way into the property.
Manchester Crown Court was informed that Liptrot falsely asserted his status as a drug dealer and wealthy, informing the woman that she would be his first sexual partner after his release from prison. He then proceeded to assault her sexually against her will.
During the ordeal, the victim pleaded with Liptrot to stop, expressing her pain and discomfort. Disregarding her pleas, he exposed himself and continued to sexually assault her, even resorting to physical force. He eventually proceeded to rape her without using protection.
The court learned that Liptrot had recently been released from a five-year prison sentence for multiple robberies against lone women at night. Subsequently arrested, Liptrot was portrayed as blaming the victim and insinuating that she was sexually promiscuous.
In a statement read in court, the woman revealed the significant impact of the assault on her life, leading to the heart-wrenching decision to place her children in long-term foster care. She recounted the loss of her home, possessions, and peace of mind, expressing ongoing fear, trauma, and isolation.
Desmond Lennon, Liptrot’s defense attorney, maintained his client’s innocence and highlighted his troubled past, including time spent in care, mental health issues, and criminal behavior. Despite a probation report indicating a high risk of harm to the public, Lennon emphasized Liptrot’s desire to reform during his time in custody.
Upon sentencing Liptrot as a dangerous offender, Judge Tom Gilbart condemned the terrifying nature of the rape and highlighted Liptrot’s lack of remorse and ongoing risk to society. Liptrot was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years and registered as a sex offender for life. As he was escorted away, a member of Liptrot’s family voiced their disdain for his actions.
