A man who is currently serving life sentences for the brutal killings of Lin Russell and her daughter Megan is undergoing a new DNA analysis in an effort to identify another possible suspect and confirm his absence from the crime scene.
Michael Stone, aged 66, will receive a visit from an investigator representing the Criminal Cases Review Commission at the prison where he is incarcerated on Thursday. This initiative, as reported by the Sunday Times, coincides with the 30th anniversary of the tragic murders that occurred in July 1996.
Stone has persistently requested new DNA testing, leveraging advancements in forensic techniques, particularly in isolating male DNA within mixed samples. If new male DNA is discovered, it could potentially be matched against Levi Bellfield, a notorious serial killer who previously claimed responsibility for the murders.
Currently detained at HMP Frankland in Co Durham, Stone is serving three life sentences for what was deemed one of the most heinous crimes in Britain’s history. The chilling incident involved Dr. Lin Russell, aged 45, walking her two daughters home from school when they were ambushed by a man who proceeded to assault them with a hammer, resulting in the deaths of Lin and Megan, while Josie, the older daughter, survived with severe injuries.
Recent developments in forensic science, including a new approach by a scientist at the Eurofins laboratory, have brought attention to specific evidence such as bloodstained items and tapings directly collected from the victims, which may provide crucial information for Stone’s case.
Stone, who has consistently proclaimed his innocence, has been seeking justice for years, emphasizing the importance of additional forensic examination to potentially identify an alternate perpetrator. It is believed that the utilization of advanced DNA testing methods could lead to significant breakthroughs in the investigation, similar to cases where innocent individuals have been exonerated based on DNA evidence.
The ongoing efforts to reexamine the forensic evidence in this case highlight the importance of leveraging technological advancements to ensure justice and accuracy in criminal investigations. Stone’s legal team remains hopeful that the new DNA analysis will shed light on the truth behind the tragic events that unfolded in Chillenden, Kent, in 1996.
