London Mayoral Candidate Linked to Unsafe Hotel Ownership

Published on

A candidate for Mayor of London from the Reform party co-owns a controversial hotel described as an unsafe “squat hotel” by guests due to issues such as mold and bed bugs. Laila Cunningham, who was selected by Nigel Farage’s party, is campaigning against crime but faces criticism over her involvement in the £50-a-night New Dawn Hotel, which has received negative feedback including reports of theft incidents.

Despite Cunningham’s intentions to protect Londoners, concerns have been raised about the safety of the hotel, with one female guest advising against staying there, particularly for women. The guest shared an unsettling experience of having to secure the room with a hairdryer cable due to a faulty lock. Records show that Cunningham, a former CPS prosecutor representing Westminster’s Lancaster Gate, holds a 5% ownership in Plaza Continental Hotels Ltd, the company that owns the property.

Guests at the hotel have voiced complaints ranging from theft to poor hygiene conditions. Reviews on platforms like Google and TripAdvisor highlight issues such as foul odors, security lapses, and uncleanliness. Some guests reported incidents of feeling unsafe, being locked in rooms, encountering pests like bed bugs, and experiencing thefts during their stays.

The Westminster City Council confirmed receiving complaints regarding the hotel’s conditions, leading to inspection visits in response. In a statement, Cunningham distanced herself from the day-to-day operations of the hotel, emphasizing its sentimental value to her family. A spokesperson for Reform UK defended Cunningham, stating that she does not actively manage the hotel and dismissed the negative reviews as unfounded allegations.

Despite the controversy surrounding the hotel, Cunningham’s campaign focuses on addressing crime issues in London. The situation has drawn attention to the challenges faced by the hospitality establishment and raised concerns about guest safety and satisfaction.
