“LONDON TUBE STRIKES CAUSE SERVICE DISRUPTIONS”

Published on

London is facing disruptions due to Tube strikes this week. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) initiated industrial action on Tuesday at midday over Transport for London’s (TfL) proposal for a new four-day work schedule.

RMT members are on strike for 24 hours on both Tuesday and Thursday. The union expressed concerns about the compressed workweek impacting safety. Commuters are advised to expect service disruptions on all lines post midday today.

Service interruptions are anticipated on the Piccadilly and Circle lines, as well as parts of the Metropolitan and Central lines. However, the Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground, and tram services will operate normally but may be crowded.

TfL mentioned that the majority of buses will run as usual during the strikes, except for seven Stagecoach-operated routes affected by a separate strike from Friday to Saturday.

During the strikes, several Tube lines, including Bakerloo, Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria, and Waterloo & City, will have no service. Additional strike actions are planned for the following days.

Certain bus routes will also be affected by a separate strike. Although most buses will operate normally, the Stagecoach-operated routes (8, 25, 205, 425, N8, N25, N205) will experience disruptions. TfL stated that some routes may be severely delayed or face cancellations.

Union leaders raised concerns about potential driver fatigue due to longer shifts under the proposed four-day workweek. They criticized the changes for possibly extending driving hours, altering shift schedules with short notice, and limiting driver flexibility.

TfL defended its proposal for a four-day workweek, emphasizing that it offers additional days off to train operators without reducing work hours. The organization described the strikes as unnecessary and highlighted ongoing trials of the new schedule on the Bakerloo Line.
