The headteacher who had been leading Stretford Grammar School for a long period has tragically passed away in a fatal road accident.
According to Greater Manchester Police, a male cyclist was hit by a car around 6pm on Sunday evening on Paddock Lane in Partington. Despite prompt arrival of emergency services and road closure, the cyclist could not survive his injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Michael Mullins, aged 56, who had served as the headteacher at Stretford Grammar School in Trafford for 17 years.
Following the incident, the school informed parents of the closure through a letter from deputy headteacher Liz Baxter. Mr. Mullins was reportedly heading home when the collision occurred.
In response to the situation, the school announced its closure on its website, citing unforeseen circumstances and promising further updates later in the day.
In an official statement, the Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) appealed for information regarding the cyclist’s death in Trafford. The collision involved a cyclist and a car at the junction of Paddock Lane, Warburton Lane, and Dunham Road in Altrincham.
The police reported that the car involved did not stop at the scene. However, they have arrested three men and one woman on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The suspects remain in custody for questioning.
Despite efforts by emergency services, the cyclist, a man in his 50s, could not be saved. The police extended their condolences to the victim’s family and assured that they were receiving specialized support.
