“Lord Blunkett Proposes New Deal for Neets Crisis”

Published on

Lord David Blunkett, a former Cabinet minister, has proposed that Britain should initiate a New Deal-style approach to address the crisis faced by young people known as Neets. This suggestion comes in the wake of a recent report by Alan Milburn, highlighting the plight of over one million young individuals who are currently not engaged in employment, education, or training.

In an article for The Mirror, Lord Blunkett emphasized the importance of prioritizing young people in government infrastructure initiatives to combat this crisis. He advocated for the construction of new schools, transport systems, hospitals, and offshore wind facilities nationwide. Estimates suggest that a workforce of 629,000 to 706,000 individuals will be required over the next five years for these projects.

Drawing parallels to President Roosevelt’s initiatives during the 1930s, Lord Blunkett stressed the need for substantial investment in skills to provide young people with opportunities for economic advancement. He highlighted past efforts by the Labour government in 1997 to support the learning and earning of a quarter of a million youngsters through collaboration with employers and education providers.

In response to the Neets report, Wes Streeting expressed openness to reversing the increase in employers’ national insurance contributions as a means to boost youth employment. However, Pat McFadden, the Work and Pensions Secretary, cautioned against hasty tax changes, emphasizing the need to consider the broader implications of such decisions.

Furthermore, a recent study by the Roundhouse arts venue and youth charity revealed a concerning trend of diminishing opportunities for young people to socialize, create, and collaborate. The research highlighted the decreasing availability of youth clubs and community spaces, leading to feelings of isolation among young individuals.

Comedian Jack Rooke, an advocate for youth creativity, emphasized the importance of restoring access to creative spaces for young people from diverse backgrounds. He stressed the need to create avenues for self-expression, skill development, and envisioning future career paths, irrespective of financial constraints or social disparities.
