Lorraine Kelly, along with her husband Steve Smith, who is a retired TV cameraman at the age of 65, is known for having one of the most stable marriages in the entertainment industry. In a rare revelation, the 66-year-old chatshow host shared that their relationship almost didn’t take off due to her initial drunken advances towards him.
The couple, who have a daughter named Rosie, aged 31, who is now a mother herself, first crossed paths while working together in the 1980s at TV-AM, a channel that is no longer operational. Lorraine was immediately drawn to the cameraman and made her move during a filming session in Glencoe with a mountain rescue team.
Recalling the moment, Lorraine admitted, “I got him terribly drunk and leapt on him like a ninja. He had no defense, poor soul.” She explained the challenges of dating a colleague, especially in a small team, emphasizing the importance of being certain about the person.
Fortunately, their gamble paid off, and the couple, residing in Berkshire, has now been happily married for 35 years. Lorraine expressed her desire to celebrate their upcoming 35th anniversary by embarking on an adventurous trip to Mongolia or spending more time exploring the Falklands, which she likened to Scotland but with penguins.
Describing their favorite pastime, Lorraine shared that their shared passion for traveling takes precedence in their spending habits. Unlike many who splurge on material possessions, Lorraine and Steve prioritize travel experiences. They enjoy exploring different parts of the world, with frequent trips to Asia due to family connections.
In a memorable celebration of their silver wedding anniversary in 2017, the couple followed in the footsteps of Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton on an adventurous journey to Antarctica. Lorraine, currently featured in “Lorraine Kelly’s Norwegian Odyssey” on Channel 4, revealed their annual tradition of visiting Africa, including countries like Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.
Lorraine also disclosed how they keep the spark alive in their relationship, mentioning that Steve sends her playful messages when he sees her in daring outfits on-air. She emphasized the importance of maintaining mutual attraction and humor in their marriage, noting that laughter plays a significant role in their relationship.
