In a groundbreaking archaeological excavation, researchers have unearthed an impressive staircase leading to a hidden section of Pompeii that once accommodated the affluent Romans.

Initially believed to be a staircase to nowhere within the House of Thiasus villa in Pompeii, it turns out that it served as an entrance to an urban center that boasted opulent high-rise living spaces.

Contrary to previous assumptions, archaeologists have determined that this area belonged to a prosperous family, with the towers now in ruins once serving as residences for the wealthy, as revealed by Pompeii Sites.

Gabriel Zuchtriegal, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, emphasized the significance of the newly discovered “Lost Pompeii,” particularly the upper levels of structures crucial for understanding life in the ancient city.

Utilizing digital archaeology techniques, a research team has reconstructed models depicting the lavish villas in Pompeii, indicating that the city’s grandest residences likely featured towers symbolizing power and affluence.

Zuchtriegal noted the complexity of archaeological investigations at Pompeii, combining fieldwork to unveil intact historical contexts and narratives of the eruption, along with non-invasive research to reconstruct lost elements enriching our comprehension of the site.

Researchers from Humboldt University in Berlin have recreated the tower of the House of Thiasus through cutting-edge technology, presenting their findings in the E-journal Scavi di Pompei.

By employing digital archaeology, the team has pieced together a virtual representation of Pompeii before its devastation by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E., speculating that the ash preserved the lower levels of buildings while destroying the upper levels.

Analyzing architectural clues like disconnected staircases and truncated support structures, the researchers have digitally depicted a new vision of Pompeii, highlighting the staircase’s connection to a tower providing panoramic views of the city and Bay of Naples.

The team suggests that the tower could have stood at a height of up to 40 feet, with the House of Thiasus likely being a multi-story edifice, featuring a modestly furnished lower section contrasting with the grand external staircase leading to more elegant living quarters.

Through the creation of 3D digital models based on collected data, the researchers aim to reconstruct hypothetical scenarios that offer insights into the lifestyle, spaces, and societal norms of ancient Pompeii.
