Renowned filmmaker Louis Theroux has garnered attention with his latest documentary, Louis Theroux: Inside The Manosphere. Throughout his extensive career spanning decades, the 55-year-old journalist and documentarian has delved into controversial subjects. He has engaged with neo-Nazi leaders, the infamous “Most Hated Family in America,” and notably, Jimmy Saville prior to the revelation of his heinous acts. Despite his bold choices in subject matter, Theroux recently disclosed that there was one topic he hesitated to explore due to safety concerns.
The sensitive subject in question is the extremist group ISIS, also known as Daesh, IS, or ISIL. Theroux confessed that he refrained from covering ISIS due to the perceived risks involved for himself and his film crew. While ISIS has diminished in strength and influence since its peak in the mid-2010s, the group remains somewhat active, as evidenced by recent incidents in Australia and Syria.
In a candid interview with LadBible, Theroux expressed his apprehension towards delving into the atrocities committed by ISIS, citing the extreme violence and irrationality exhibited by the group. Despite his fascination with human behavior and organized madness, Theroux deemed it too perilous to venture into ISIS territory for filming.
Reflecting on his recent experiences, Theroux shared insights into being on the other side of the camera during the production of his manosphere documentary. In a conversation with comedian Romesh Ranganathan, Theroux acknowledged feeling discomfort when his own narrative was challenged by those he was documenting. Furthermore, he discussed his family’s surprisingly calm attitude towards his risky profession, particularly noting his wife’s seemingly nonchalant demeanor despite the inherent dangers.
Theroux’s openness about his filming approach in hazardous environments and his family dynamics sheds light on the complexities of his professional and personal life, highlighting the delicate balance between his work persona and his roles as a husband and father.
