Luke Donald is scheduled to have discussions with the DP World Tour in Dubai this week regarding the possibility of serving as the Ryder Cup captain for the third time in 2027. Shane Lowry, who played a crucial role at Bethpage Black, has encouraged Donald to continue leading the team in Ireland.

As the former world No.1, Donald led Europe to a remarkable victory in Long Island last September, following their triumph in Rome in 2021. No European captain has secured three wins, with only Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher achieving the role more than twice.

At 48 years old, Donald is participating in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic this week, marking his first tournament of the year. In addition to his playing commitments, he plans to engage in discussions with DP World chief executive Guy Kinnings regarding the Ryder Cup captaincy, as Europe is expected to make a decision in the coming months.

“I will sit down for a chat with Guy this week just to see where I am,” said Donald. “I kinda know what the job entails but just to see what they are looking for. Just a chat. I have got a couple more months to decide. Usually they announce it sometime in March. It is a little bit more work at home.”

Lowry, who secured a crucial half point in New York to retain the Ryder Cup, expressed his support for Donald potentially taking on the captaincy again. “I think it’s Luke’s if he wants it,” said the world No.26.

The decision ultimately rests with Donald, considering the significant commitment involved, especially with the added responsibilities of a home Ryder Cup. Other potential candidates, such as Vice-captain Francesco Molinari or Justin Rose, could be considered if Donald opts not to pursue the role again.
