In 1993, a tragic event unfolded in Sicily when 12-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo was deceived by Cosa Nostra mobsters posing as police officers. The young boy, whose father had turned against the Mafia for his safety, was kidnapped and held captive for almost 800 days in a cafe by notorious hitman Giovanni Brusca and mob boss Salvatore ‘Toto’ Riina.
During his captivity, Giuseppe endured brutal beatings and starvation as part of a cruel scheme to prevent his father from testifying in the case of murdered anti-Mafia judge Giovanni Falcone. Falcone, known for his relentless pursuit of Mafia justice, was tragically killed in a car bombing orchestrated by Brusca in 1992.
After 779 harrowing days, Brusca ordered the execution of Giuseppe, who was strangled to death and his body dissolved in acid to erase any trace of the crime. Brusca, unrepentant about his heinous acts, later bragged about his gruesome actions in his memoirs.
Despite eventually being apprehended and sentenced to 25 years in prison for over 100 murders, Brusca’s release in 2021 sparked outrage in Italy. The widow of one of Falcone’s bodyguards expressed dismay over the lack of closure after almost three decades, while Giuseppe’s family received compensation for his tragic death in 2018. Santino, Giuseppe’s father, continues to mourn his son’s cruel fate and denounce the evil acts perpetrated against innocent victims by criminal organizations.
