Following his release from prison in September, Brueckner, a convicted sex offender, has been camping in a tent in a woodland in northern Germany. However, authorities have announced that he will transition to a permanent residence by Thursday in response to community protests aimed at enhancing public safety.
This development comes shortly after a prominent local official engaged in crisis discussions with concerned citizens at a protest gathering on Monday, organized after Brueckner rejected council accommodation, as reported by the Sunday Mirror.
For security reasons, municipal representatives have refrained from disclosing the details of the property Brueckner will be moving into. Nevertheless, it is known that the previous rejected dwelling was a converted shipping container commonly utilized in Germany to address homelessness.
Expressing disappointment over Brueckner’s imminent relocation within her unnamed city, the co-leader of the advocacy group Victim Protection Before Perpetrator Protection, Annika B, lamented the decision, emphasizing the impact on the victims of Brueckner’s crimes.
Brueckner had briefly stayed in a safehouse in another locality before being relocated due to public awareness of his presence.
Addressing concerns at a recent protest, Katharina Hahn, one of the protest organizers, highlighted the community’s apprehensions, particularly regarding child safety and the need for improved law enforcement in the area.
Brueckner, a key suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, was previously imprisoned for a rape incident in Portugal but has consistently denied involvement in the McCann disappearance and has not faced charges related to the case.
Despite wearing a monitoring device for five years, Brueckner expressed intentions to leave Germany following a court ruling on his monitoring conditions. Speculations suggest he might seek refuge in a country without extradition agreements, like Suriname in South America, although his crowdfunding efforts for this purpose were unsuccessful.
