A man aged 35 has made a court appearance on a murder charge related to the death of a nine-year-old girl who was discovered injured in Arbroath.

The girl, Minnie Merriman from West Yorkshire, was found injured at the Elliot industrial estate in Angus in the early hours of Monday while her family was camping nearby. She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but sadly passed away.

The accused, Christopher Rice, hailing from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, faced the murder charge at Forfar Sheriff Court without entering a plea. He was remanded in custody for further examination.

Rice is scheduled to appear in court again within the next eight days. Investigations revealed that Minnie and the 35-year-old suspect were acquainted.

Minnie’s family issued a statement through Police Scotland, paying tribute to her as “beloved, incredible, beautiful, and brave Minnie Moo.” They have requested privacy during this challenging time.

Reports indicate that Minnie was camping with her family, who are receiving support from specialized officers. Detective Inspector Mike Ness from Police Scotland expressed condolences to Minnie’s family and assured continued police presence during the ongoing inquiries.
