“Man Admits Cruel Pony Dragging Method: Violates Animal Welfare Act”

Published on

A man from Aberbran, Brecon, named Geoffrey Williams admitted to utilizing a controversial method of handling ponies by tying them up and dragging them behind a moving vehicle. This method, which he claimed to have used for years to “break in ponies,” caused a pony to endure pain, suffering, and injury, leading to a violation of the Animal Welfare Act.

Williams, who appeared in Merthyr Magistrates’ Court, acknowledged that his handling approach was outdated and unacceptable. Despite his admission, he assured that he had discontinued this practice. The distressing incident, captured on video, showed a black and white pony being pulled behind a vehicle in a sloped field on April 2 of the previous year.

The court heard from RSPCA staff who presented video evidence of the pony’s mistreatment. A veterinarian from another organization described the footage, indicating that the pony, a young cob, was tethered to a vehicle by a rope attached to its headcollar. The vet highlighted the harmful physical and mental impact on the pony, likely resulting in lasting fear and physical harm.

The veterinarian’s statement emphasized that the pony would likely bear long-term effects of the traumatic experience, potentially leading to a lifelong fear of handling. The RSPCA inspector, Keith Hogben, stressed the importance of using humane and scientifically sound methods for training animals, especially equines, to ensure their well-being.

The court’s judgment included a £1,000 fine for Williams, along with additional costs. Despite the legal proceedings, it was not disclosed whether the abused pony had been rescued or rehomed. The incident serves as a reminder of the significance of compassionate and ethical treatment towards animals, particularly during training and handling practices.
