A man successfully climbed a frozen waterfall in Gordale Scar, located near Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales, amid the cold Arctic weather gripping Britain. Mick Ellerton, 48, accomplished the challenging ascent after the waterfall froze due to plummeting temperatures.

This remarkable achievement occurred just before the anticipated arrival of Storm Goretti, expected to bring heavy snowfall and strong 90mph winds across the country, prompting the Met Office to issue various weather warnings. The recent heavy snowfall has already resulted in numerous school closures and isolated some remote communities in northern regions.

Mr. Ellerton, an experienced climber and instructor at Lost Earth Adventures, praised the tranquility and beauty of the Yorkshire Dales compared to more popular tourist destinations. He described the national park as “absolutely beautiful” and shared his excitement about scaling the icy waterfall, a rare opportunity due to specific weather conditions.

Originally from Australia, Mr. Ellerton developed his passion for ice climbing at a young age and currently resides in Skipton, North Yorkshire. With a background in rock climbing and caving, he also volunteers for a cave rescue charity, emphasizing the importance of maintaining rescue skills through challenging activities like mountain climbing.

While enjoying the thrill of climbing, Mr. Ellerton highlighted the practical aspect of honing skills necessary for mountain rescues with the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association.
