A man confessed to a paramedic while next to his deceased wife, who had a knife in her chest. Stephen Mooney, now serving a life sentence in Mountjoy Prison, pleaded guilty to murdering his wife, Anna Mooney, in their Kilbarrack home in June 2023. The incident occurred while their children were upstairs.

Mooney, previously an estate agent with a clean record, placed a hidden camera to uncover his wife’s phone PIN suspecting an affair. Despite this, Mooney has remained silent about the crime to fellow inmates, reportedly tormented by guilt.

When emergency services arrived after Mooney’s distress call around 1:09 am on June 15, the first responder found him beside his wife’s lifeless body in the kitchen. Mooney immediately confessed to the paramedic, admitting to the killing and citing a long-standing affair as the motive.

Although Mooney initially admitted to manslaughter, a chilling audio recording of the stabbing surfaced, leading to his confession to murder. An investigation revealed a video showing Mooney cleaning up after the murder with a hunting knife.

A post-mortem examination confirmed severe injuries to Anna, including fatal stab wounds to her heart, diaphragm, and abdomen. Mooney and Anna, married in 2005 after moving to Ireland from Ukraine, have two children. During court proceedings, it emerged that Anna had a relationship with a man in Germany.

Addressing the court, Mooney expressed deep remorse and apologized to Anna’s family, acknowledging the pain he caused. Sentenced to life imprisonment, he pleaded for forgiveness, especially from his children, hoping for eventual reconciliation.
