A man has confessed to killing a young woman just hours before her 21st birthday.

Michael Moore, also known as Michael Doherty, was scheduled to face trial at Leeds Crown Court today following his arrest for the murder of 21-year-old Courtney Angus in July of the previous year.

The 37-year-old was accused of not only murdering the young woman but also being in possession of a bladed weapon, causing public disturbance, and making threats with a bladed weapon in a public setting. The deceased woman was discovered in a residence on Norfolk Street, Batley, mere hours before her planned 21st birthday celebration at Sky Lounge, according to Yorkshire Live.

West Yorkshire Police became aware of Ms. Angus’ death after responding to reports of an armed robbery at an Asda supermarket in Dewsbury at 9:20 pm on July 26, 2025.

Following this incident, law enforcement apprehended a man who allegedly informed them of a woman he believed was deceased inside a Norfolk Street residence. A knife was confiscated at the scene, as confirmed by the police.

Upon arrival at the Batley address, they found Ms. Angus, a Dewsbury resident. Doherty, residing on Norfolk Street, confessed to the murder today and also acknowledged theft and three instances of threatening another individual with a blade. However, he refuted the charges of possessing a bladed weapon and causing affray.

Judge Tom Bayliss KC stated that Doherty’s sentencing would occur at a later date. He also addressed Doherty, saying: “You have admitted to the murder of Courtney Angus.

“The penalty for murder is mandated by law – it is life imprisonment, but the judge overseeing your case will need to determine the minimum term before you can be eligible for parole.

“This decision will be made by another judge on another occasion, and in the meantime, you will remain in custody.”

Following the confirmation of the young woman’s passing, Ms. Angus’s family issued a statement.

They expressed: “Our world has been shattered and thrown into disarray with the devastating news that no parent ever wants to receive – the loss of our beautiful daughter and sister.

“Courtney possessed a kind soul. She adored music, social gatherings, and enjoying life. The entire family is devastated by the loss of such an incredible woman.”
