A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for causing the death of a grandfather with a single punch during a fight outside a pub in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire. Nathan Gothard, 37, knocked down David Darke near the Crown Inn just days before Christmas last year, resulting in a fatal skull fracture, as detailed by jurors at Leicester Crown Court.
Although Gothard was acquitted of murder, he was found guilty of manslaughter following a short deliberation period. During sentencing, Judge William Harbage KC emphasized the tragic loss, highlighting Darke’s role as a beloved father of three daughters. The judge condemned Gothard’s violent act, stating that it was unnecessary and had dire consequences.
The court heard that the altercation stemmed from an unsettling atmosphere at the Crown Inn, where Gothard’s behavior had been disruptive and aggressive towards a group including Darke. Despite being involved in a prior scuffle, Darke had intervened to help Gothard before Gothard struck him, claiming self-defense.
In victim impact statements, Darke’s daughters described their father as courageous and kind, underscoring the devastating impact of his untimely death on their family. Gothard’s actions were criticized for leading to a senseless loss and irreversible consequences. The family expressed their gratitude for the support received during a difficult trial period.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames from the East Midlands special operations unit (Emsou) murder investigation team acknowledged the family’s resilience and thanked them for their cooperation throughout the legal process. He highlighted the lasting impact of Gothard’s actions, emphasizing the family’s need to adjust to life without their loved one.
