A man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 19 years for the murder of his five-month-old stepson, Jensen-Lee Dougal, in Clydach, Swansea Valley. Thomas Morgan, 29, was found guilty of the crime after a jury trial at Swansea Crown Court.
Morgan, from Gorseinon, Swansea, had initially denied the charges, claiming he tried to save Jensen-Lee when the baby started choking. However, the court heard that the baby suffered catastrophic brain damage, multiple fractures, and severe retinal bleeding to both eyes, leading to his death on March 31, 2024.
The prosecution revealed that Morgan, who was in a relationship with Jensen-Lee’s mother, Jordan Dougal, had abused the trust placed in him by assaulting the baby the day before his tragic death. The court heard that Morgan had engaged in a heated text message argument with his ex-partner, Georgia Griffiths, during which he made derogatory remarks. He then purchased cannabis, pastries, and alcohol with the baby in the car before returning home to watch TV.
Following a call from Morgan claiming the baby was choking and had stopped breathing, Jensen-Lee was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to a severe brain injury. Detective Chief Inspector Lianne Rees of South Wales Police expressed that while the conviction provides some justice, it does not alleviate the immense pain suffered by Jensen-Lee’s family.
The tragic incident in March 2024 prompted an outpouring of support from the public, first responders, and all involved in the efforts to save Jensen-Lee’s life. The resilience and grace exhibited by Jensen-Lee’s family throughout this ordeal were also acknowledged.
