A tragic incident in Montana’s Glacier National Park resulted in the death of a man who fell 100 feet while being attacked by a surprised grizzly bear. This marks the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1998. The authorities have decided not to euthanize or hunt down the bear responsible for the attack as it was not actively hunting the man.

The victim, identified as 33-year-old Anthony Pollio from Florida, was hiking alone on the Mount Brown Lookout trail when the attack occurred. The trail was obstructed by fallen trees, hindering visibility for both the man and the bear. Despite attempting to defend himself with bear spray, Pollio tragically fell down a slope during the attack.

After falling nearly 100 feet, Pollio tried to climb back up but was fatally attacked by the bear. Investigators determined that the bear, believed to be at least 15 years old, acted defensively in a surprise encounter rather than a planned attack. The bear left the scene after inflicting fatal injuries on the victim.

Bear attacks in Glacier National Park are rare, with only 10 incidents recorded since 1967. To prevent such encounters, hikers are advised to remain vigilant, make noise while hiking, carry bear spray, and avoid hiking alone or at night. These precautions can help reduce the risk of surprising bears in their natural habitat.
