Two individuals are being sought in connection with an attempted arson attack at a synagogue in north London, where two bottles believed to contain petrol were thrown at the building. The Metropolitan Police is treating the incident as a potential hate crime after the suspects, dressed in dark clothing and balaclavas, were observed approaching Finchley Reform Synagogue in the early hours of Wednesday.
Although the bottles did not ignite, a brick was also hurled at the synagogue, resulting in no reported damage or injuries. Detectives from the Met’s North West Command Unit, aided by specialists from Counter Terrorism Policing London, are currently investigating the incident. As of now, no arrests have been made.
The police are urging any witnesses to come forward, emphasizing the seriousness of such incidents in the community, especially following a recent arson attack in Golders Green. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, overseeing policing in the area, reassured the public of the swift investigative efforts to apprehend the suspects. Residents can anticipate heightened police presence in the vicinity, with additional officers deployed to address any concerns.
In a statement, the police described the incident as an antisemitic hate crime, detailing the suspects’ actions and the lack of damage or injuries. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the authorities, either directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
