Fiona Phillips’ spouse, Martin Frizell, has shared a poignant update on her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The 65-year-old former journalist was diagnosed with this progressive brain disorder in 2022 and published her memoir, “Remember When: My life with Alzheimer’s,” last year.
Martin revealed that Fiona, who is also grappling with chronic depression, is now apprehensive, a stark contrast to her previous fearless demeanor. He mentioned that while Fiona openly discussed her condition in her book, she now avoids mentioning the “A-word” and prefers not to dwell on it.
During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, Martin expressed that Fiona now only recalls limited memories, such as forgetting Christmas 2025. Despite her cognitive decline, he emphasized that Fiona’s resilient spirit still shines through, describing her as the “world’s most stubborn woman” who continues to be a strong presence in their home.
Reflecting on the challenges they face daily, Martin lamented the toll Alzheimer’s has taken on Fiona’s dignity and independence. He recounted the distressing moments of confusion during travel, where Fiona struggles to comprehend her surroundings, leading to heightened stress for both of them.
Martin shared his emotional turmoil, acknowledging the guilt he feels when not by Fiona’s side. He admitted to grappling with the constant balancing act of caring for Fiona while needing breaks for his own well-being.
Despite the irreversible nature of Fiona’s condition, Martin remains an advocate for early detection and improved support for Alzheimer’s patients. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness and enhancing care services to benefit individuals and families affected by this debilitating disease.
