Mercedes Driver Survives Spectacular Crash on Busy Road

Published on

A shocking video has emerged capturing the moment a Mercedes driver crashed into a roundabout, launching his car over multiple vehicles on a busy road, yet miraculously surviving the ordeal.

The CCTV footage depicts the car speeding along a city street before hitting the curb at a roundabout, propelling it into the air. The Mercedes narrowly avoids colliding with a camera as it somersaults over a bus and two cars, eventually colliding with a pole at the roadside.

Authorities in Oradea, a city in northwestern Romania, reported that the incident occurred when the 49-year-old driver experienced a diabetic episode, leading to a loss of control and the high-speed impact with the roundabout.

Witnesses from nearby apartments recounted hearing a loud crash, prompting some residents to come out as emergency services rescued the driver from the wreckage and rushed him to the hospital. The driver had entered the roundabout in the wrong direction, striking the central island at a high velocity, which launched his car airborne.

The vehicle was captured soaring through the air, crossing a hedge before hitting a metal pole near a petrol station. Fortunately, the car narrowly missed a large petrol pump, averting a potential catastrophic explosion.

Despite sustaining multiple fractures, the driver’s injuries were not life-threatening. Medical professionals confirmed that the unconscious driver had experienced severe hypoglycemia, where blood sugar levels drop dangerously low.

Subsequently, authorities suspended the driver’s license for 90 days and imposed a fine of 1,600 Romanian lei (£270). In Romania and other EU nations like the UK, drivers with diabetes must demonstrate an understanding of the risks associated with hypoglycemia, with repeated episodes potentially leading to being deemed unfit to drive.

Earlier this year, a separate incident involving a drink driver was captured on video, showing the driver flipping his car at 116mph, requiring firefighters to extricate him from the heavily damaged vehicle. The driver, Michael Bailey, was found to be over twice the legal alcohol limit and was handed a suspended prison sentence following the court proceedings.

Commenting on the case, a representative from Cambridgeshire Police emphasized Bailey’s luck in escaping with minor injuries considering the high-speed nature of the crash, highlighting the potential for a more tragic outcome for both Bailey and other road users that night.
