“Met Office Issues Snow Warnings for 13 Regions”

Published on

Two weather warnings for snow issued by the Met Office are currently active in 13 regions starting today. The first yellow warning, effective overnight until 3pm tomorrow, encompasses large portions of eastern and northern Scotland. According to the Met Office, rain is expected to transition into sleet and then snow in the affected areas throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday.

Anticipated snow accumulations range from 1cm to 3cm above 100 meters by Wednesday, with up to 20cm possible in elevated areas exceeding 200 meters. The mix of sleet and snow may cause disruptions today and tomorrow, potentially leading to delays in road, bus, and train services.

In addition, a second yellow warning is in place for the Shetland Islands from 6pm today until the end of Wednesday. Wintry showers are forecasted to intensify into more persistent snowfall from Tuesday evening, persisting through Wednesday. Snowfall totals of 1cm to 3cm are expected widely, with the potential for up to 10cm over higher terrain.

Residents in the warned areas are advised to plan their journeys ahead and ensure they have essential supplies in their vehicles in case of any delays.

Meanwhile, southern England has been experiencing rainfall since Monday. A yellow warning, effective from Monday evening until 7pm on Tuesday, covers regions in the southwest. The Met Office cautions that continued rainfall into Tuesday could result in flooding and disruptions.

The Met Office’s forecast for today indicates that persistent rain in the south will gradually move northward, with additional rain and hill snow in the northeast of Scotland. Cloudy conditions are expected with mostly dry spells between weather systems, along with clearer intervals in the southwest.

Later in the day, the rain is projected to progress northward, turning into snow over higher elevations in Wales, the Pennines, and eastern Scotland. The northern regions will experience windy and chilly conditions, while the south will have clearer skies with occasional showers.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, the Met Office forecasts, “Rain and hill snow will be limited to the north, with continued windiness in the northeast. The southern regions will be drier with some sunny periods. Mild temperatures expected in the south, while colder conditions persist further north.”
