Labour’s metropolitan mayors have shown solidarity with the Mayor of Minneapolis following the controversial shooting incident involving ICE. Mayor Jacob Frey gained attention for his swift reaction to the shooting, condemning ICE and demanding their departure from Minnesota.
Video footage released recently offers a different perspective on the incident, showing Renee Good attempting to drive away when she was shot by the ICE agent. This contradicts claims made by Donald Trump and JD Vance, suggesting that the shooting was in self-defense.
In a joint statement, Labour’s metropolitan mayors praised Mayor Frey and other U.S. mayors for their compassionate leadership during this tragic event. They emphasized the importance of protecting human rights and dignity within communities.
Signatories of the statement include prominent mayors like Sadiq Khan, Andy Burnham, Steve Rotheram, Tracy Brabin, and others. Meanwhile, protests have erupted outside a Minneapolis hotel where ICE agents are believed to be staying, disrupting their rest.
Despite claims by JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, experts maintain that the video does not support the notion of self-defense. Mayor Frey has dismissed any such argument as baseless.
Furthermore, policing experts have raised concerns about the officer’s training and conduct in the video. Questions have been raised regarding the handling of the situation and the perceived threat posed by Renee Good.
The ICE agent involved in the shooting, identified as Ross, is a veteran with extensive experience in law enforcement. Last year, he was injured during an immigration arrest, highlighting the risks faced by officers in such situations.
