Welsh actor Michael Sheen, known for his roles in Good Omens and Frost/Nixon, reveals his preference for folk music over new romantic tunes from the 1980s, despite his teenage years in that era. Sheen expresses his admiration for Jethro Tull, stating that the band captured his heart, alongside enjoying Duran Duran. As the host of the Radio 2 Folk Show, Sheen will showcase music from the Blackpool band, known for their unique blend of progressive rock, folk, and classical genres.
Sheen’s affinity for folk music deepened during his involvement in the 2002 comedy drama Heartlands, where the music, courtesy of folk singer/songwriter Kate Rusby, left a lasting impression. Another cherished musical memory for Sheen involves his encounter with English folk group, The Unthanks, whom he invited to his home in Port Talbot, South Wales. Sheen recounts a heartwarming moment when his daughter compelled the Unthanks to perform live in their kitchen, creating a memorable experience.
Listeners can catch Michael Sheen hosting The Folk Show on Radio 2 on Wednesday, 29 July, from 9-10pm, or stream it on BBC Sounds.
