Migrants in Ceuta Demand Asylum, Conditions Deteriorate

Published on

Hundreds of migrants, part of the group that recently arrived in Ceuta, a North African enclave of Spain, gathered on a popular urban beach to demand asylum from Spanish authorities instead of being repatriated to Morocco. Following a mass border crossing two weeks ago that brought in over 72,000 individuals, approximately 5,000 to 8,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, with most living in challenging conditions on El Trampolin beach or the city’s outskirts while waiting for an opportunity to travel to mainland Europe.

Ayoub Elarroud from Tetouan, Morocco, expressed the hardships faced by the migrants, mentioning that they were sleeping near the sea in harsh conditions and facing obstacles from the police in accessing the city center. The protesters displayed Spanish flags and signs conveying their desire not to return to Morocco, emphasizing their humanity and the need for a resolution.

Health services in Ceuta are strained, with Enrique Roviralta, the head of the city’s medical board, highlighting the exhaustion of limited healthcare workers and a slow response from the central government. He noted the outbreak of diseases like infectious diarrhea and scabies, as well as an increase in violence-related injuries. Health Minister Monica Garcia clarified that while local services were under pressure, they had not collapsed, rejecting any association between migration and illness as unjust and xenophobic.

Many Moroccan migrants cited poor working conditions in their country as the driving force behind their journey, despite holding higher qualifications. Mohammed Ouanzar, an automation specialist, expressed the financial struggles in Morocco, prompting his decision to seek a better life in Spain. Emmanuel, a Nigerian electrician fleeing conflict, shared his motivation to provide a better future for his children, willing to accept any job offered to him.

The migrants in Ceuta come from diverse backgrounds, each with their own story of hardship and hope for a better future. Their presence has brought challenges to the city, sparking discussions on humanitarian aid and asylum processes.
