“Millions Gather in Mecca for Annual Hajj Pilgrimage”

Published on

Muslims worldwide are converging in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, a significant religious event that draws millions of worshippers to the sacred city of Mecca. This pilgrimage, a fundamental tenet of Islam that many followers aspire to undertake at least once in their lifetime, involves a series of essential rituals such as circling the holy Kaaba and gathering at Mount Arafat for prayers.

The Hajj occurs during Dhul Hujjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, culminating in Eid Al-Adha on May 27 for the majority of participants. The observance includes the act of Tawaf, where worshippers perform the ritual circling around the Kaaba, a mandatory practice during both Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

As pilgrims flock to Mecca, facilities like hotels, airports, and roads are experiencing a surge in activity. With temperatures soaring to 44°C, attendees are urged to shield themselves from the scorching heat, stay hydrated, and avoid peak outdoor hours.

Eid al-Adha, celebrated on May 27, is a significant festival for Muslims, marking the conclusion of the Hajj period and known as the “Feast of Sacrifice.” Following the Eid prayer, adherents partake in Qurbani, the ritual sacrifice of livestock like sheep, goats, cows, or camels, symbolizing Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering devotion to Allah.

Pilgrims endure arduous journeys amidst intense heat between holy sites in Mecca. Sweltering conditions are forecasted as Gulf countries transition into the summer season, with temperatures ranging from 42°C to 44°C and lows of 26°C to 29°C.

Before embarking on the pilgrimage, worshippers reflect on their intention to perform the Hajj and then enter the state of Ihram, wearing white garments symbolizing equality before Allah. Practices like sex, smoking, or body shaving are prohibited during the Hajj to maintain a state of holiness.

Completing the Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and a mandatory obligation for physically and financially capable Muslims. By visiting Mecca and fulfilling various religious rites, pilgrims fulfill this sacred duty at the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad.
