“MOBO Awards Founder Kanya King Dies at 57”

Kanya King, a prominent figure in the music industry, has tragically passed away at the age of 57 after a valiant fight against colon cancer. The founder and CEO of the MOBO organization peacefully succumbed to the disease on June 3, 2026, following what her organization described as a brave and resolute battle with colon cancer.

In a statement, the organization expressed, ‘She was surrounded by her family, close friends, and love. The music industry has lost one of its most courageous advocates.’

Three decades ago, Kanya King took a significant risk by remortgaging her home independently, without institutional or industry support, to establish a platform that would revolutionize British music.

King, a single mother from a Kilburn council estate, defied skepticism about the viability of Black music, and instead of engaging in debate, she took action. Just six weeks later, the inaugural MOBO Awards were broadcast nationwide, marking a pivotal moment in the music scene.

Her creation of the MOBO Awards was more than just an awards ceremony; it symbolized an act of cultural equity. MOBO not only celebrated Black music but also validated, promoted, and showcased its commercial and artistic influence to a world that had previously overlooked it.

The legacy of Kanya King’s vision is evident in every artist who graced the MOBO stage since 1996, every subsequent opportunity, and every barrier broken, including artists like Olivia Dean, Stormzy, and Amy Winehouse, among others.

King’s influence extended globally, reaching millions of individuals. Honored with a CBE and an Ivors Academy Honor in 2025, she continued to inspire others even during challenging times. Her resilience and determination were unwavering, as she never sought approval and refused to accept defeat.

Despite her health struggles, King, in a speech at the 2025 MOBO Awards, emphasized her refusal to be confined by limitations set by others, highlighting her steadfast resolve in both personal and professional endeavors.

The upcoming 2026 MOBO Awards, coinciding with the organization’s 30th anniversary, will be dedicated in honor of King’s remarkable legacy.

King, who launched the MOBOs in 1996 to celebrate Black talent in entertainment, revealed her stage four bowel cancer diagnosis in December 2024, expressing her shock and determination to face this unforeseen challenge.

Despite the difficulties ahead, the 55-year-old remained optimistic, viewing her diagnosis as an opportunity to inspire resilience, raise awareness, and advocate for early detection and proactive health management.

As the youngest of nine siblings and a mother at 16, King’s life experiences, including her challenging upbringing and early motherhood, profoundly shaped her perspectives. She leaves behind a son, Jem, and a legacy of dedication and inspiration.
