Renowned figure in Gardeners’ World, Monty Don, recently shared a challenging financial experience where he and his wife, Sarah, faced significant financial losses. Despite being married for over 42 years and Monty’s successful gardening career, they encountered hardships early in their marriage due to the impact of the 1987 financial crash.
In an interview with The Times, Monty revealed the extent of their financial struggle, stating that they lost everything, including their home, business, and possessions. The collapse of their jewelry business following the crash left them in severe debt, forcing them to rely on government assistance for about two years. It took Monty seven years to fully repay their debts, describing the period as extremely difficult.
The 1987 financial crash, known as Black Monday, was a global event that caused a severe stock market downturn, leading to widespread concerns about prolonged economic instability. Despite the setbacks, Monty and Sarah managed to rebuild their financial stability. Monty began writing a gardening column for the Mail on Sunday in 1989, eventually branching out into presenting gardening segments on This Morning later that year.
Over the years, Monty expanded his television career, taking on hosting roles in BBC shows like Holiday and Tomorrow’s World before becoming the main presenter of Gardeners’ World in 2003. Despite initial doubts about his presenting abilities, he embraced the opportunities as a means of supporting his family.
Monty and Sarah, who have three adult children, navigated their financial challenges and emerged stronger. While Monty’s success in the gardening world continues to grow, he humorously revealed that he has repeatedly turned down offers to participate in Strictly Come Dancing due to his lack of dancing skills and recent knee surgery limitations.
Acknowledging his work-life balance struggles, Monty admitted to prioritizing work over personal life in the past, a trait he acknowledges needs improvement. Despite his dedication to his career, Monty remains committed to his family and work on Gardeners’ World.
