“Morrisons Shoppers Outraged Over Cash Machine Fees”

Published on

Morrisons shoppers in Stakeford are expressing anger over a recent change that now requires them to pay a fee when using the cash machine at their local Morrisons Daily convenience store. The decision to implement this charge is part of a trial being conducted at a few Morrisons Daily locations, as the cash machine is managed by an external provider, not directly by the store.

Customers have taken to social media platforms such as Facebook to voice their frustrations, with one individual highlighting the sudden introduction of fees for cash withdrawals. This move has sparked backlash among shoppers who believe that free access to cash withdrawals has been a longstanding practice and view it as an unwelcome financial burden.

The disappearance of nearly 19,000 free-to-use ATMs from UK high streets since January 2018 has further exacerbated the issue. Data from the Payment Choice Alliance indicates a 5% decline in the average amount withdrawn from ATMs by UK adults in 2025 compared to the previous year.

On a different note, Morrisons reported annual losses of £381 million for the year ending October 26, primarily due to a substantial interest payment of £281 million on its debt. Despite a reduction in losses from the previous year, the supermarket chain, owned by US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, still ended the financial year with a significant debt of £3.1 billion.

The company cited increased expenses and a cyber incident that disrupted IT systems before the Christmas season in 2024 as contributing factors to the financial challenges faced. Nonetheless, Morrisons saw a positive sales performance over the Christmas period, with a notable increase in like-for-like sales and strong demand for its own-brand premium products.

Rami Baitieh, the CEO of Morrisons, highlighted the company’s resilience in a competitive market, emphasizing sustained sales growth and market share retention despite economic pressures.
