An Illinois woman accused of murdering her two-year-old son had been actively following the trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy, exchanging text messages with friends about the case just before her son’s tragic death, according to prosecutors. Corie Walsh, 40, faces three counts of first-degree murder after her son, Barrett, was discovered deceased in the basement of their suburban Chicago residence on September 1, as per court records obtained by NBC Chicago. Prosecutors revealed that Walsh was deeply engrossed in Clancy’s high-profile trial and engaged in discussions about it until around 12:30 p.m. on the day of the incident. Not long after, a neighbor found Barrett in the basement. Walsh was located elsewhere in the house with self-inflicted injuries. She later confessed to authorities that she committed the act because she believed her son was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” Her attorney, Andrea Lyon, attributed Walsh’s actions to a psychotic episode, labeling the boy’s death as a tragedy for the entire family. Police were alerted to the situation at Walsh’s home in Frankfort, approximately 56 kilometers southwest of Chicago, shortly before 4 p.m. after the neighbor’s distressing discovery. The neighbor initiated CPR and called emergency services, but Barrett was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy revealed that he died from ligature compression of the neck causing asphyxia. Law enforcement officers found Walsh in a bathtub filled with bloody water, dressed, and with cuts on her wrists and thighs. She was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The revelation that Walsh had been monitoring Clancy’s trial surfaced following a mistrial declaration in the Massachusetts case, where jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision. Authorities in Illinois have not implicated Clancy’s trial in Walsh’s son’s killing, and there is no known public evidence linking the two cases. Requests for comments made to Frankfort police and Will County prosecutors went unanswered on Monday.
