A woman has been found guilty of killing her 17-month-old child by stabbing her and throwing her off a hotel balcony in a distressing incident. Channel Yonko, the mother, was convicted in the death of her daughter, Hannah Yonko, who was thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Beachfront Palms Hotel in October 2024. The tragic event was reported by Houston Public Media.
Assistant District Attorney Michael Rinehart, emotionally impacted by the evidence, stated that the case was deeply moving. The authorities responded to a report of an abandoned child around 9.45 am, leading them to discover the injured girl on the pavement outside the hotel.
Despite sustaining severe injuries, Hannah was discovered alive in Galveston, US, and taken to the hospital for urgent care. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
In addition to being thrown from the balcony, the child had three puncture wounds and multiple stab wounds as indicated in a probable cause affidavit. Surveillance footage from the hotel captured the moment she fell from the third floor. Authorities also recovered a bag from a hotel bin containing a knife, toys, and children’s snacks. Yonko was promptly arrested, and her mental state became a focal point of the trial.
Yonko’s claims of being “insane” and under demonic influence during the incident were dismissed in court. Several psychiatric assessments were conducted on Yonko following her indictment in January 2025.
Psychiatric specialist Edward Gripon confirmed that Yonko was mentally fit to stand trial, able to comprehend legal proceedings and recall events leading up to the tragedy in Galveston. Yonko denied substance abuse history but disclosed a prior head injury and periods of memory loss.
Child Protective Services documented an incident in 2019 involving Yonko’s other child being taken to a hospital emergency room due to suspected intoxication of the parents.
State prosecutors announced they would not pursue the death penalty in Yonko’s case, with former Galveston County District Attorney Jack Roady emphasizing the gravity of such decisions in the criminal justice system.
Due to the victim’s age being under 10, Yonko received an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole under Texas law. Juror Jeanie Tinkle expressed sadness over the case and the difficulty in reaching a verdict sympathetic to Yonko given the tragic circumstances.
