A mother has criticized a court ruling following a brutal dog attack that left her young daughter with a serious leg injury necessitating surgery. The incident took place at Beibio playing park in Holyhead on August 24, 2025.
Bethan Farr, 51, residing in Peibio Close, Holyhead, appeared before Caernarfon Magistrates Court on Monday, January 18. She was handed a 12-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to being in control of a dog that was dangerously out of control and caused harm. In addition to the sentence, Farr was ordered to pay £500 in compensation and complete rehabilitation activities. The dog, described by the mother as a “pocket bully,” was also mandated to be euthanized.
The girl’s mother, under a reporting restriction preventing her identification, expressed frustration with the sentence, feeling let down by the justice system. She disclosed that her daughter underwent two surgeries and spent days in the hospital after the traumatic incident.
Recalling the day of the attack, the mother explained that her daughter, playing hide and seek with friends, encountered a dog at the park. Despite being unafraid of dogs, the situation escalated when the dog chased and bit her daughter, causing extensive injuries.
Following the attack captured on CCTV, a friend rescued the girl from the dog’s grip, and she was swiftly taken for medical treatment. The severity of her injuries prompted her parents to rush her to a hospital for urgent care.
The girl remained hospitalized for several days, undergoing surgical procedures to address the deep wound and facilitate healing. Despite the ordeal, she has since made a remarkable recovery, albeit with a newfound caution around dogs.
Reflecting on the incident and subsequent legal proceedings, the mother expressed disappointment with the court’s decision, feeling that it did not adequately address the gravity of the situation. She emphasized the importance of supporting her daughter through the recovery process and instilling pride in her resilience.
Throughout the challenging journey, the girl’s family has remained steadfast in their support, encouraging her to embrace her healing journey and view her scar as a symbol of strength and survival.
