The devastated mother of a young boy who lost his life in an explosion at an apartment building has shared the heartbreaking moment when she realized her son was no longer alive. Archie York, a seven-year-old, tragically died in the blast caused by an illegal cannabis factory explosion in Benwell, Newcastle, in October 2024. A new document, endorsed by Archie’s parents Katherine Errington and Robbie York, recounts his story and provides guidance on identifying cannabis “shatter” factories.

Reece Galbraith was sentenced to 14 years in prison in June for triggering the explosion that claimed the lives of both Archie and 35-year-old Jason Laws. The two men were operating an illicit drug production site in a ground-floor flat within a 12-unit residential complex.

The explosion was a result of a buildup of butane during the production of drug-infused candies by both individuals. Katherine, a 28-year-old mother of two, vividly recalled the terrifying experience of waking up to screams and darkness, as she struggled to maintain consciousness amidst the chaos.

She and Robbie have thrown their support behind a Newcastle city council initiative aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future. Katherine emphasized Archie’s kind nature and her desire to assist others in his memory, expressing her wish to spare other families from enduring the same pain they have suffered.

Detailing her harrowing experience, Katherine described the moments of panic and desperation as she and Robbie searched for Archie amidst the rubble, only to later receive the devastating confirmation of his passing. The couple had to identify their son through dental records, photographs, and the pajamas he wore during the tragic incident.

Robbie expressed his profound grief over the loss of Archie and his growing anger towards those responsible for the explosion. He condemned the reckless actions of Reece and Jason, accusing them of prioritizing profit over the safety of others, including their own children.

Councilor Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle City Council, commended the courage of Katherine and Robbie for raising awareness and sharing their story to highlight the dangers of drug production. She emphasized the importance of awareness and vigilance in preventing such tragedies from reoccurring.
