A mother of three who disappeared over two decades ago has disclosed the reasons behind her departure from her family after authorities found her leading a hidden dual life.
Michele Lyn Hundley Smith, then 38, went missing from her residence in December 2001, informing her family she was stepping out for Christmas shopping. Her vanishing act prompted various agencies to initiate extensive search missions that consumed numerous man-hours as law enforcement pursued several leads.
During that time, a missing person bulletin classified Michele as “endangered” and stated she “would not abandon her children willingly.” However, last week, police announced Michele had been located “alive and in good health” following a tip-off received 24 years later.
Michele, who departed from her house in Eden, North Carolina, reportedly confided in authorities about the true cause of her departure. Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page informed People magazine, “There were no allegations of any foul play related to her leaving.”
“She mentioned she departed due to ongoing domestic issues at the time,” he elaborated without providing further details on the nature of these “domestic issues.” Michele’s relatives have been informed of her safe discovery.
Her daughter Amanda shared on Facebook over the weekend, “These past few days have been a rollercoaster of emotions.” She continued, expressing mixed feelings towards her mother’s return and uncertainty about rebuilding their relationship.
Michele’s cousin, Barbara Byrd, spoke to a local news outlet after her reappearance, expressing relief and curiosity about the events leading to Michele’s departure years ago. Despite understanding Michele’s wish for no contact, Barbara emphasized the joy of knowing she was alive, overshadowing all other concerns at the moment.
According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, North Carolina currently has approximately 653 active missing persons cases, with 1,340 cases resolved in the state. Nationwide, there are 26,249 open cases and 64,384 closed cases across all US states and territories, as per the same database.
