A mother whose daughter fell ill after visiting a nightclub linked to a significant meningitis outbreak shared how she missed two urgent calls when her daughter’s health deteriorated. Khali Goodwin, the mother of 22-year-old Keeleigh Goodwin, recounted Keeleigh’s ordeal with headaches, nausea, and exhaustion after contracting the illness in Canterbury, Kent, believed to have originated at Club Chemistry.

Khali disclosed to the Mirror that Keeleigh, a Canterbury resident, initially thought she had Covid-19 after her nightclub visit but woke up the next day to missed calls, including one from the hospital. The outbreak has tragically claimed the lives of two individuals, a 21-year-old student and an 18-year-old student from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham, with several others, including Keeleigh, hospitalized.

Recalling her conversation with Keeleigh, Khali advised her to rest and sleep to recover from what seemed like a common illness. However, Keeleigh’s condition worsened, reporting symptoms like extreme body stiffness and a persistent headache, classic signs of meningitis. Despite recommending rest and a painkiller, Khali was shocked to discover the severity of Keeleigh’s situation when the hospital called to report a seizure and fall at home.

As Keeleigh was over 22 and not eligible for the meningitis B vaccine routinely administered to babies since 2015, she remains hospitalized in isolation despite showing signs of improvement, such as normalized temperature and blood pressure. Khali expressed relief that Keeleigh is recovering, albeit still battling a relentless headache.

Khali urged parents to act swiftly on any suspicion of their child’s illness, advising them to seek medical advice promptly, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and early intervention in such cases.
