A mother and her family narrowly avoided danger when she initially dismissed her son’s claim about a crocodile near their residence. Stephanie Kirsop initially thought her son was joking when he alerted her to a reptile sighting. However, upon investigating, she was shocked to find a crocodile in the nearby creek.
The experts highlighted the potential danger posed by the crocodile species in question. Stephanie considered the incident a close call, especially since her children and their friends often frequent the creek for swimming and fishing activities in Newcastle, a coastal city in New South Wales, Australia.
Reflecting on the encounter, Stephanie expressed disbelief at first, thinking her 12-year-old son was trying to deceive her. Despite capturing videos to prove the existence of the crocodile, she remained skeptical until she witnessed it herself.
The small Australian freshwater crocodile, measuring 39 inches in length, was eventually captured two miles away from the initial sighting location. Authorities initially had doubts about the report from Stephanie and her son due to the prevalence of false alarms in the area.
Billy Collett, the manager of the Australian Reptile Park, even suspected the authenticity of the images sent to him, considering the advancements in artificial intelligence. The crocodile is currently under the care of the Australian Reptile Park until a decision is made about its permanent relocation.
Crocodiles are protected by Australian law, and it is believed that the captured reptile was once a pet released into the wild due to its size or dangerous nature. Mr. Collett emphasized the importance of rescuing the crocodile to prevent its demise during the upcoming winter season in the Southern Hemisphere.
