After the life support of eight-year-old Josh Hillstead was turned off, his mother kept her hand on his heart until it ceased beating. Josh was just short of his ninth birthday by one hour and 44 minutes, with birthday presents waiting for him at home. Tragically, this vibrant young boy lost his life after wading into the River Arrow in Alcester during a summer evening walk with his family. His brave sister, Caitlyn-Ann, risked her own life by jumping in to rescue him but sadly, he slipped from her grasp as they attempted to return to safety.
Since the heartbreaking incident, Josh’s mother, Becky Hinde, has been tirelessly advocating to prevent similar tragedies. She has now joined the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to raise awareness about water safety, especially during the ongoing heatwave. Drowning incidents in the UK have reached alarming levels, prompting organizations like the RNLI and Royal Life Saving Society UK to collaborate with the Mirror in urging the government to take immediate action.
Becky emphasizes the unpredictability of water and the need for vigilance, stating that water poses a threat regardless of age, size, or strength. Reflecting on the events leading to her son’s tragic passing, Becky shared the heart-wrenching moment when she received the devastating news of Josh’s accident and rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital to be by his side.
Despite efforts to save Josh, including heroic actions from bystanders and medical staff, his condition worsened, leading to the agonizing decision to let him go. Becky vividly recalls the heartbreaking moment when Josh took his last breath, surrounded by loved ones. She cherishes the memories of her son, describing him as an exceptional child with a heart of gold, dearly missed by family and friends.
