A mother is advising parents to follow their instincts after her 10-year-old son fell critically ill following a family vacation. Caroline Lawton, hailing from Warrington, Cheshire, journeyed to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt with her spouse and two children for a 12-night all-inclusive trip. Shortly before their return flight, her son Jude began experiencing stomach issues.

Initially, Caroline assumed it was a typical holiday ailment known as ‘Egypt belly’. She remarked that Jude showed mild symptoms, attributing them to the condition. However, her concern escalated when they reached the airport. Jude displayed signs of fatigue, reluctance to walk, and frequent bathroom visits. It was during the flight that Caroline noticed blood in his stool, causing her to panic. Jude also exhibited shaking and extreme coldness, prompting the airline staff to adjust the aircraft’s temperature to warm him up.

Upon landing back in the UK, Jude’s health deteriorated rapidly. He was hospitalized, isolated, and later diagnosed with STEC E.coli, a bacterial infection leading to bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. The infection progressed to haemolytic uraemic syndrome, a severe complication damaging small blood vessels and potentially causing kidney failure.

Jude was transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, where he underwent dialysis and a blood transfusion due to kidney failure. Caroline recalled the distressing experience of seeing her son swollen and struggling to open his eyes. The medical team indicated a rapid decline in his kidney function, necessitating urgent intervention. After a series of treatments, Jude’s kidney function gradually improved, and he was eventually discharged after two weeks of care.

Caroline emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs and trusting parental instincts. She shared her story to raise awareness and prevent other families from enduring similar traumatic experiences. Jude’s recovery is ongoing, with long-term monitoring essential to address potential health complications resulting from the E.coli infection.

Although Jude only dined outside the hotel once during the trip booked via easyJet holidays, the exact source of the infection remains unidentified. Caroline has reached out to both the holiday company and the hotel for clarification. EasyJet is actively investigating the matter in collaboration with their hotel partner to determine the root cause.

An easyJet holidays spokesperson expressed regret over Jude’s illness and assured ongoing support for his family. They affirmed their commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly alongside the hotel partner.
