“MPs Unite for Water Safety Urgency Amid Rising Drowning Incidents”

Published on

Politicians converged in Westminster yesterday to urge government action on water safety in anticipation of the upcoming school holidays. The gathering followed the tragic loss of 13 children and six adults to drowning during the recent heatwave. Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme MP Lee Pitcher, a staunch advocate for youth water safety, was among those present at the meeting.

Pitcher emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further tragedies, citing the impending hot summer and increased alcohol consumption due to the World Cup as potential risk factors. He called for a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of unsupervised water activities.

Leading the charge for water safety legislation, Pitcher spearheads the Private Members’ Bill Sam’s Law. Alongside MPs, athletes, activists, and grieving families supporting the Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam initiative, he urged the government to launch an educational campaign before the school summer break to educate young people on water safety measures.

The event also saw Simon Haycock, father of 16-year-old Sam who tragically drowned in a reservoir, cautioning about the misconceptions surrounding open water swimming. Vanessa Abbess, whose son Joe died in a rip current off Bournemouth beach, highlighted the unpredictable nature of such incidents.

Jim Dickson, MP for Dartford, stressed the importance of water safety following a drowning in his constituency during the recent heatwave. The call for action was echoed by Darren Paffey, MP for Southampton Itchen, and former minister Anneliese Dodds.

Pete Kennedy, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at the Royal Life Saving Society UK, emphasized the critical need for immediate government action to prevent drownings. Collaborating with various organizations, MPs, and bereaved families, the campaign aims to disseminate life-saving information to children before the summer holidays.

The Royal Life Saving Society UK, along with several other entities, have joined forces with the Mirror, MPs, and bereaved families to advocate for enhanced water safety measures. Olympic stars Becky Adlington, Tom Dean, and Michael Gunnin have also lent their support to the cause.

The collective effort calls for a united push to prioritize water safety, especially as the summer season approaches.
