“Multiple Landslides Block South Klondike Highway”

Published on

A sequence of landslides has obstructed the South Klondike Highway located south of Carcross, Yukon, resulting in the suspension of road travel connecting the territory with the southeast Alaska community of Skagway. The closure spans from kilometre 106 to 24, as indicated by the Yukon Department of Highways and Public Works in a social media update on Tuesday evening. This closure effectively halts traffic from Carcross through northern British Columbia to the U.S.-Canada border. A representative from the department confirmed in an email that multiple landslides occurred, with assessments scheduled to commence on Wednesday morning.

No vehicles were affected by the landslides, according to notices shared by the Skagway Police Department. However, at least two tour buses carrying cruise ship passengers are currently stranded due to the blockage. Reports from the department suggest that it will take a considerable amount of time to clear the mudslides, indicating a potential closure lasting several days.

An advisory mentioned that the mountain slope is unstable, necessitating a geologist’s evaluation before road clearance can proceed. In a separate announcement, the Skagway police informed that the highway would partially reopen on Wednesday morning from the international border to the Yukon-British Columbia border to accommodate tours but no traffic would be permitted beyond kilometre 80.
