A mother of two passed away four years after being informed that a mole removed from her back was not concerning. Josie Thompson, aged 37, recently succumbed to the disease, prompting her family to advocate for regular sunscreen use to reduce the risk of metastatic malignant melanoma.
In the summer of 2022, Josie’s husband, Laith, noticed a change in a mole on her back, which had darkened and changed shape. Following a doctor’s visit, she underwent mole removal at a local dermatology department and was initially reassured that there were no worrisome signs. However, the mole reappeared through the scar tissue shortly after its removal.
Despite a second removal procedure with a wider excision, Josie was reportedly informed that the mole was benign and was not referred for further scans, despite her requests. By March 2023, the mole had returned, and subsequent scans revealed stage three cancer in her lymph nodes due to melanoma.
Josie received the devastating diagnosis while at an aquarium with her daughters, Rebecca, 10, and Sophie, 6. Despite her relentless fight, she passed away at 37 years old. Her family now aims to raise awareness about skin vigilance and the importance of timely medical examinations to potentially save lives.
They advocate for increased awareness about skin protection, advising against sunbed use, prompt examination of unusual marks, and consistent use of SPF50, even in winter. Jade Thompson, 40, lauded her sister as a vigilant individual who took great care of her fair skin. She expressed frustration over the delayed diagnosis and emphasized the importance of early detection.
Specialists recommended immunotherapy for Josie in March, but complications arose during the treatment, leading to the development of Myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune condition. Despite efforts to explore various treatment options, including dietary changes and a positive mindset, the cancer spread to Josie’s liver, lungs, and spine.
Josie’s family commemorated her 37th birthday at Disneyland Paris before her final months were spent at St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth. Throughout her battle, Josie established an online community called ‘Josie’s Journey,’ which garnered a significant following on Facebook, where she raised awareness about skin cancer detection.
Jade emphasized the importance of early intervention and skin protection measures, highlighting the severity of melanoma. She encouraged individuals to prioritize skin health by using high SPF sunscreen daily, avoiding sunbeds, and promptly seeking medical attention for any skin changes.
To support Josie’s family, a fundraiser has been set up to assist her young daughters and husband with funeral costs and ongoing care. Jade expressed pride in Josie’s legacy of saving lives through awareness efforts and highlighted the need for increased education on skin cancer risks and prevention strategies.
