A man has been accused of murdering a British charity worker and concealing her body in a suitcase after expressing strong opinions on social media about perceived corruption within Christian organizations. Sharif Ahmadzai, who allegedly committed the crime against Elisabeth-Jane Ross in Athens, embraced Christianity following his encounter with his now-wife Alaina Hall during charitable activities. The couple jointly manages Love Every Nation, a charity that aids homeless individuals and refugees in the Greek capital.
Despite their charitable endeavors, Ahmadzai, 26, is set to stand trial for the murder of Ms. Ross. Her remains were found by a homeless person in an abandoned structure in Athens on July 18. Surveillance footage recently surfaced showing Ahmadzai, a skilled boxer, transporting a suitcase through the city center, believed to contain Ms. Ross’s body. Originally from Edinburgh, Ms. Ross was a humanitarian worker who crossed paths with Ahmadzai and his spouse through volunteer work.
Recent revelations disclosed Ahmadzai’s frequent critical posts on Facebook over the past year, denouncing the activities of Christian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) he had encountered on Lesvos, Greece. Additionally, he shared images of t-shirts advocating for a boycott of corrupt NGOs and recounted his volunteer work as a translator in the Lesvos’ Moria refugee camp between 2016 and 2019, from ages 16 to 20.
In one of his social media posts from May, Ahmadzai lamented the exploitation of vulnerable populations by certain NGOs, accusing them of using the guise of charity for personal gain. He emphasized the misuse of funds, mistreatment of volunteers, and the deceptive practices of some organizations operating under the Christian umbrella. Despite acknowledging the presence of well-intentioned individuals within these systems, Ahmadzai condemned the overarching corrupt structure.
Born in Afghanistan and later settling in Greece, Ahmadzai was apprehended with the assistance of the UK’s National Crime Agency and Police Scotland, following the discovery of Ms. Ross’s mobile phone at his residence in Athens. While he has admitted to handling and withdrawing money from her accounts, Ahmadzai denies the murder allegations. Authorities remain unconvinced by his claims.
Notably, Ahmadzai’s wife, Alaina Hall, a US citizen and friend of the victim, has been cooperative with law enforcement. She alerted the authorities after noticing Ahmadzai’s suspicious behavior and his absence from their shared residence. Family members of Hall have expressed concerns about Ahmadzai, particularly her aunt Leanne Hall, who revealed reservations about his character.
