Criminal authorities have provided a significant update regarding the suspected killing of a British visitor at a popular pub. Darragh O’Brien, 22, has been formally accused of murder in connection with the death of Anthony Herron, who was in his 40s, following an altercation in Dublin’s Temple Bar Square area in the early hours of August 21.
Mr. Herron, a father of a three-year-old child and a recent homeowner in London with his pregnant spouse, sustained critical injuries during the reported attack. O’Brien, residing in Beechfield Heights, Dublin, made an appearance at the Dublin District Court on Friday.
O’Brien had previously faced legal action last year linked to the same incident near Temple Bar Square. Following the altercation, he was initially treated at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin before being transferred to King’s College Hospital in the UK.
Tragically, Mr. Herron passed away on October 25, 2025, as confirmed by the Gardai. During the court proceedings on Friday, Garda Colin Coyne-Delaney informed that O’Brien was apprehended on Thursday and officially charged at 10:04 pm for “the murder of Anthony Herron.” O’Brien remained silent upon being charged.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has mandated that the murder charge be escalated to the Central Criminal Court. O’Brien, who attended court in a blue tracksuit before Judge Gerard Jones, has been detained in custody and is scheduled for his next appearance at Cloverhill District Court.
