“Mystery Illness Claims Lives of British Tourists in Cape Verde”

Published on

Several British holidaymakers experienced severe symptoms and ultimately passed away due to an unknown stomach illness during their vacation in a sunny destination. Among them were Elena Walsh, 64, from Birmingham, Mark Ashley, 55, from Bedfordshire, Karen Pooley, 64, from Gloucestershire, and a 56-year-old man. These individuals died within a four-month period after their trips to the Cape Verde islands off the west coast of Africa. In total, six people have died following vacations there since 2023, according to legal representatives for their families.

The law firm, Irwin Mitchell, representing the families, disclosed the distressing symptoms the deceased individuals endured as investigations into their deaths remain ongoing.

Emma, 55, Mr. Ashley’s wife, expressed deep shock over her husband falling severely ill during their holiday and never recovering. She recounted how Mr. Ashley, a self-employed forklift truck driver, became violently ill three days into their October vacation, experiencing symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and extreme lethargy. Irwin Mitchell stated that they are representing the families of the deceased individuals as well as over 1,500 other individuals who fell ill after visiting the country.

After their return to the UK, Mr. Ashley’s symptoms persisted, leading to his collapse at home in Houghton Regis. Despite being rushed to the hospital on November 12, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His death is under coroner’s investigation. Additionally, part-time nurse Ms. Walsh passed away in August 2025 after falling ill at the Riu Cabo Verde resort on the same island.

Ms. Pooley, who traveled to the Riu Funana resort in Sal on October 7, 2025, also suffered from severe symptoms, including diarrhea, leading to a tragic outcome. Her husband, Andy, mourned her loss, describing her as a kind and loving person who enjoyed various activities and was a cherished friend to many.

Irwin Mitchell detailed that Ms. Pooley’s initial death certificate from Cape Verde authorities listed multiple causes of death, including multi-organ failure, sepsis, cardio-respiratory arrest, and a fractured left leg. The law firm mentioned two other British individuals who passed away after suffering from gastric illnesses following trips to Cape Verde. The families of all six deceased individuals are pursuing personal injury claims against Tui, a major provider of package holidays to the island country.

Jatinder Paul, a serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, expressed deep concern over the high number of tourists falling ill in Cape Verde and emphasized the need for improved hygiene standards at the resorts. He urged tour operators to prioritize safety and hygiene to prevent further tragedies.

Tui has been approached for comment on the matter.
