A cashier at Nationwide, Kelly Kershaw, has been sentenced to jail for stealing significant sums from vulnerable customers to fund her extravagant vacations. The 54-year-old, who had been employed by the building society for 17 years, came under scrutiny when her colleagues noticed her luxurious lifestyle displayed on social media, featuring skiing trips, safaris, and European getaways.

During a court hearing, it was revealed that Kershaw, based in Caernarfon, North Wales, manipulated cash withdrawals from elderly and vulnerable clients, diverting the money for personal use. The investigation by Nationwide uncovered five victims who had fallen prey to her scheme.

Among the victims was an 85-year-old man who had suffered a stroke and lost £6,300 to Kershaw, and a 49-year-old man with learning difficulties who was defrauded of £1,400. Kershaw was confronted by financial investigators in November 2024, leading to her confession and subsequent arrest.

In court, Kershaw admitted to five counts of fraud committed between 2023 and 2024. Her defense lawyer cited a compulsive spending addiction as a contributing factor to her actions. Despite expressing remorse, she was sentenced to 16 months in prison by Judge Timothy Petts, who emphasized the need for a deterrent against such exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

While all victims were reimbursed by Nationwide, a proceeds of crime hearing is scheduled to address the financial losses incurred by the building society. The case highlights the importance of trust and integrity within financial institutions, underscoring the severe consequences of breaching that trust.
