A member of the NATO alliance has issued a warning about the increasing threat of a potential Third World War. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski addressed the Sejm, the country’s parliament, emphasizing the need for readiness in the face of a conflict on a scale reminiscent of past generations.
Sikorski highlighted Poland’s vulnerable position, being situated on the frontline between Russia and Ukraine. He stressed the importance of not being complacent or indifferent to the looming danger posed by potential Russian aggression. According to Sikorski, Russian President Putin’s intentions are not for peace but for domination, underscoring the potential escalation of the threat if Ukraine were to be defeated.
Concerns were raised about Russia’s hostile activities targeting countries on NATO’s eastern flank, with reports of drone intrusions, railway sabotage, and disinformation campaigns already underway. The foreign minister recalled a tragic incident involving a seven-year-old Polish girl killed by a Russian missile strike in Ukraine.
Recent events have heightened tensions, with NATO air defenses in Romania placed on high alert following a Russian drone nearing its airspace during attacks on Ukrainian ports. NATO fighter jets were deployed multiple times this week in response to potential Russian missile and drone threats in Poland and Romania.
In Ukraine, the Dnipropetrovsk region experienced sustained Russian artillery and drone attacks, resulting in injuries. Ukrainian Armed Forces retaliated by targeting an oil depot in Russian-held territory, causing power outages in Belgorod.
The situation underscores the escalating conflict dynamics in the region, with growing concerns about the potential for a wider conflict.
